Safeguarding Your Mouth From Stress

Advanced Dentistry

We know the world is a super crazy place right now, so we thought we’d put together some tips to help maintain your oral health if you’re currently experiencing any increased stress:

1. Don’t ditch the self-care! After a busy, stressful day it’s all too easy to skip your evening oral health care routine and fall straight into bed exhausted. But dedicating just a few minutes to cleaning your teeth before bed is super important! Not only does your night-time clean help reduce the risk of tooth decay but investing time in yourself is good for your mental wellbeing. You’re worth it!

2. Breath! Ok this one seems pretty obvious but we’re not just talking about breathing, we’re talking about breathing properly – in through the nose and out through the mouth. Breathing properly not only reduces muscle tension but it can also help maintain good oral hygiene by reducing the risk of dry mouth. Our saliva is an extremely important defence against bacteria and maintaining a healthy production can help in the fight against tooth decay.

3. Relax! We know, easier said than done sometimes! When we’re experiencing stress, we often find that our muscles tense up – including the muscles in our face. Ever found yourself clenching your teeth when you’re concentrating on something particularly tricky or pressured? Prolonged clenching or grinding can lead to tooth wear, sensitivity and even tooth fracture so taking a moment to consciously relax the muscles in your face can really make a difference. If you find that clenching or grinding is becoming more frequent or you are concerned about the effects, come and speak to us as we offer many different solutions including night guards and muscle relaxant injections.

And finally, remember you’re amazing! If you need support reach out, we’re here to help with any of your teeth related worries or questions!
