A crown is placed over a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. A crown is made to look like your tooth. Many people call it a cap.
Crowns may be placed for several reasons. Usually the tooth has been broken or damaged a great deal. As a result, a filling can’t replace enough of the tooth or make the tooth strong enough. Crowns can be used to improve appearance as well. They may be placed to cover misshapen or badly discoloured teeth.
Crowns are usually completed within two appointments. On the first appointment, we prepare the tooth and take impressions, which are then sent to our ceramist and place a temporary crown. These take time to make, as they are handmade. You will come back for a further appointment and then we will remove the temporary crown that was placed on the first appointment and place the final crown into place.
Inlays are porcelain fillings which as used as a long term preventive treatment. They can be used instead of large white fillings, however they do not cover tooth surface to such a grand scale as a crown. They are tooth coloured and look wonderful. They also take two appointments and follow the same steps as a crown to complete.
